University of the Witwatersrand operates its own student residences in Johannesburg. Places in university housing are limited and demand usually exceeds supply, so residence is applied for alongside, or immediately after, your application to study.
How placement usually works
Universities generally give first year students and students who live far from campus priority, and returning students reapply each year. Being accepted to study is not the same as being given a residence place: the two decisions are made separately, and one can arrive well before the other.
If you do not get a place
The alternative is private accommodation. If you are funded by NSFAS, the accommodation allowance can only be used at private providers the institution has accredited, so check the accredited list before you sign anything. Never pay a deposit for a room you have not seen or for a listing that cannot be verified through the institution.
Current room types, rates and application dates are published by the university. Confirm them on the official website before you plan your budget.
