SETA learnerships

How learnerships work in South Africa and where the real openings are advertised.

A learnership is a structured programme that combines classroom learning with real work. You are placed with an employer, you study towards a registered qualification, and you are paid a stipend while you do it. At the end you hold a qualification and you have work experience, which is the combination most employers ask for.

Where they come from

Learnerships are run through the Sector Education and Training Authorities, the SETAs. Each SETA covers one part of the economy, such as banking and insurance, manufacturing and engineering, agriculture, health and welfare, or wholesale and retail. Employers partner with their SETA to run the programme.

How to find one

There is no single national list. Openings are advertised by the SETA for your sector, by individual employers on their careers pages, and by your nearest labour centre. Work out which SETA covers the field you want to work in, then follow that SETA directly.

Watch for scams

A genuine learnership never asks you to pay a registration or placement fee. If someone asks you for money to secure a place, walk away and report it.
